Visual inspection remains the primary method for routine bridge inspection (NBI) by FHWA-qualified inspectors. For fracture-critical members (FCM) requiring detailed inspection, PT and MT on accessible steel elements are standard. UT and PAUT are used for weld inspection and crack characterization in girders, connections, and suspender cables. Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) is widely used for deck condition surveys. What is ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and when is it used in infrastructure inspection?
GPR uses radar pulses (typically 400 MHz to 2.6 GHz) transmitted into a structure and records reflections from subsurface features — rebar, post-tensioning tendons, delamination planes, voids, and utility conduits. For bridge deck condition surveys, GPR provides a rapid, non-contact scan of the entire deck to map delamination and subsurface corrosion that precedes surface deterioration. GPR is also used for locating embedded utilities in concrete floors and walls, assessing backfill conditions around buried structures, and evaluating pavement layer thicknesses. Results require interpretation by experienced operators — GPR is not a self-interpreting technology.
What qualifications do infrastructure NDT companies need?
