Best Infrastructure NDT Inspection Companies

Infrastructure NDT applies non-destructive evaluation to bridges, highways, dams, tunnels, buildings, and utility systems — assets where aging, fatigue, and environmental degradation create structural integrity risks that conventional visual inspection cannot fully characterize. Structural NDT companies use ground-penetrating radar (GPR) for concrete condition assessment, UT and phased array for structural steel weld inspection, magnetic flux leakage for tension rod and cable evaluation, and acoustic emission monitoring for structural health monitoring. Many infrastructure NDT projects fall under FHWA (Federal Highway Administration) or state DOT requirements, and inspectors performing bridge element inspection under AASHTO standards must hold FHWA bridge inspection certification in addition to relevant NDT certifications.

Why these suppliers?

  • Infrastructure NDT companies with FHWA-qualified bridge inspection teams can perform element-level NBI assessments and fracture-critical member inspections required for federally funded bridge programs — beyond the scope of general industrial NDT providers.
  • Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) specialists provide non-destructive concrete condition surveys for bridge decks, parking structures, and tunnels — mapping delamination, rebar location and depth, and void detection without core drilling or destructive sampling.
  • Acoustic emission (AE) monitoring companies offer continuous structural health monitoring for bridges, dams, and buildings under load — providing real-time warnings of active crack growth or structural deterioration between scheduled inspections.

Frequently Asked Questions

What NDT methods are used for bridge inspection?
Visual inspection remains the primary method for routine bridge inspection (NBI) by FHWA-qualified inspectors. For fracture-critical members (FCM) requiring detailed inspection, PT and MT on accessible steel elements are standard. UT and PAUT are used for weld inspection and crack characterization in girders, connections, and suspender cables. Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) is widely used for deck condition surveys. Magnetic flux leakage and acoustic emission monitoring are used for hanger rod and cable inspection. Eddy current testing is used for fatigue crack detection at fastener holes and welded connections on steel bridges.
What is ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and when is it used in infrastructure inspection?
GPR uses radar pulses (typically 400 MHz to 2.6 GHz) transmitted into a structure and records reflections from subsurface features — rebar, post-tensioning tendons, delamination planes, voids, and utility conduits. For bridge deck condition surveys, GPR provides a rapid, non-contact scan of the entire deck to map delamination and subsurface corrosion that precedes surface deterioration. GPR is also used for locating embedded utilities in concrete floors and walls, assessing backfill conditions around buried structures, and evaluating pavement layer thicknesses. Results require interpretation by experienced operators — GPR is not a self-interpreting technology.
What qualifications do infrastructure NDT companies need?
For bridge inspection work on federally funded projects, team leaders must meet FHWA requirements (NBIS training program, typically AASHTO certification or 10+ years documented experience). NDT technicians performing structural element inspection should hold ASNT Level II certification in the applicable methods (MT, PT, UT). For fracture-critical bridge inspection, special training on fracture mechanics and FCM inspection procedures is required. State DOT inspector qualification requirements vary — confirm the company's certifications meet the requirements for your state and project type before engagement.
